Is It Worth Buying US Airways Miles With 100% Bonus

Screen Shot 2014-02-23 at 9.48.52 AMI’ve been receiving occasional e-mails from US Airways with an interesting offer. Due to being a US Airways credit card member, I have been given an exclusive offer– to buy or gift miles with a 100% bonus.

Now, I’ve never actually flown US Airways from what I could recall, but I have been building up my Dividend Miles account for a while. I originally planned to increase my account to have more options for flights in the future.

(Tip: It’s always best to have miles/ points spread out and not keep all of your cards in one place. Having options are best- if one airline/ alliance doesn’t have award availability, you could always check the others.)

With US Airways merging with American Airlines recently, Dividend Miles will soon become AAdvantage Miles. This could potentially be a nice way to top off my account.

However, due to a few reasons I wouldn’t ever consider buying miles- even with this 100% bonus offer.

What are my reasons?

  1. I have a lot of AAdvantage miles. Although, you could never have too many miles I am not willing to spend lots of $$$ to purchase more.
  2. Thanks to the amazing Citi Executive AAdvantage card sign-up bonus, I’ll be adding another 100,000 miles to my AA account once I finish hitting the $10,000 spend. While this card is not cheap ($450 annual fee), it is still an amazing offer. The card also comes with Admirals Club membership and a $200 statement credit.
  3. I can also earn up to 40,000 Dividend Miles by applying for the US Airways Premier World Mastercard. You earn 30,000 miles after your first purchase (and can earn an additional 10,000 when you transfer a balance which I would not recommend).

The only times I could see buying miles would be if someone needed a small amount of miles to top off their account for an award. Or, maybe you are interested in booking a specific flight in business class and have no problem dropping the cash on the miles.

With the 100% bonus what does it cost to buy Dividend Miles?

  • 2,000 miles (1,000 + 1,000 bonus)= $35
  • 20,000 miles (10,000 + 10,000 bonus)= $350
  • 50,000 miles (25,000 + 25,000 bonus)= $875
  • 100,000 miles (50,000 + 50,000 bonus)= $1,750

This is just an example of a few of the mileage increments that you can purchase. You have the choice of buying anywhere from 2,000 to 50,000 miles with this bonus offer.

This offer is good until February 28 but like I said, I’ll be sitting this offer out.

So what do you think. Is the US Airways 100% bonus for purchasing miles a good deal? Would you be a buyer or pass on this offer?

Disclaimer: The US Airways credit card offers pay me a small commission if you apply and are approved for the card. The Citi Exec AAdvantage card does not pay me a commission.

    1. The 100% bonus offer is for US Airways credit card members only as far as I know.
You could get 100,000 miles with the Citi Exec AAdvantage card or start building up miles with the US Air card.
