I Won A Free Flight At JFK Runway Run & I’m Not Excited

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 11.21.41 PMBack in January I wrote about registration being open for the 2014 JFK Runway Run.

I had planned to write another post about it as a reminder but it slipped my mind and the race has passed- it was this past Sunday.

Runway runs are probably my favorite kind of races to participate in. They are a unique kind of race and offer access and views  at the airport that are usually not possible.

The JFK Runway Run has become an annual race for me, running in it the past 3 years now!

Registration Open For The 2014 JFK Runway Run

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 11.21.41 PM

The date has been announced and registration is open for the 2014 JFK Runway Run 5K.

For those of you unsure of what a Runway Run is, here is a little info. A runway run is pretty much, exactly what it sounds like. It’s an organized race that takes place on airport runways. Runway runs are held at both large, international airports and smaller, regional airports.

After running in 4 Runway Runs in 2012, I only had the chance to run in 1 this year. I’m hoping to run in at least 2 runway runs in 2014 but that will all depend on my schedule. With lots of trips in the works for 2014, hopefully there wont be any conflicts.

2013 LGA Runway Run- POSTPONED

a group of people running on a roadIn late June I wrote about the upcoming date for the 2013 LaGuardia (LGA) Airport Runway Run in New York. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the event but after checking many times online, I never saw a race sign up webpage or received a follow-up e-mail regarding when registration would open online.

I received some e-mails from readers asking if I had any further information about the 5K. With the race date fast approacing, I figured something was not right so I decided to call the contact from the date announcement e-mail.

When I called, I reached a voicemail. The message stated that the representative would be out of work until the end of September. With the race scheduled for October 6, I couldn’t imagine that it was still happening.

2013 LGA Runway Run- Date Announced- October 6 2013

In October I ran a 5K on the runway of LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York. It was one of four runway runs (5Ks) that I participated in during 2012.

I also ran at:
I started off 2013 by running in the JFK Runway Run once again. The race was lots of fun and I enjoyed having such great access to the runway, getting to see planes taking off and landing from up close.

Teterboro Airport 5K Runway Run- July 20, 2013

an airplane on the runway

Last month I ran in the JFK Runway Run for the second straight year. I just found out about the next, somewhat local runway run at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and wanted to share the info.

Runways runs are some of my favorite races to take part in. They raise money for various charities and also provide access to airport runways which are usually off limits.

Last summer we participated in the Teterboro Runway Run. Teterboro is a small airport and one of five operated by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
Here is a little about the airport from the Teterboro website:

Teterboro is the oldest operating airport in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. Designated as a “reliever” airport, Teterboro’s focus is on removing the smaller and slower aircraft from the regional air traffic that would cause major congestion at the Port Authority’s commercial airports. The airport consists of 827 acres. Ninety acres are for hangars, maintenance and office facilities, 408 acres are for aeronautical use and 329 acres are undeveloped.

While we didn’t get to see any planes taking off or landing during last year’s event, it was still great to see some of the smaller, private jets parked along the runway as we ran.

Some Race Info:

  • Race Date- July 20, 2013
  • Location- The main runway of Teterboro Airport
  • Starts at 8:30 AM
  • Flat course with two water stops & mile clocjs
  • $23 entry fee for pre- registering by July 16, $25 after or on race day
For entering the race, you get:
  • Teterboro 5K T-Shirt
  • Goody Bag
  • Over $10,000 in random prizes & a $1,000 grand prize!

If anyone is up for the challenge, find out more about the Teterboro Airport Runway Run (including details on how to enter) HERE

2013 JFK Runway Run Recap

a man and woman standing on a runway

On Sunday, April 14 Kim and I ran in the JFK Runway Run. I had planned to write about it the following day but a horrible, terrorist act happened at 2:49 p.m. on April 15- the Boston Marathon bombing.

Once I started hearing the details about Boston there was no way I could write about our race from the previous day.

The Boston Marathon tragedy seemed to captivate the nation (maybe the world) and pretty much shut down the city of Boston for a couple of days while law enforcement went on a manhunt to track down the terrorists.

My heart goes out to the people of Boston and all of those affected by this tragedy. I also hope for a speedy recovery to those injured at the marathon.

Now that a couple of weeks have passed since the events in Boston, I feel that it is time to write a little about our experience at the JFK Runway Run. Continue reading 2013 JFK Runway Run Recap

Reminder: Tomorrow Is The JFK Runway Run (4/14/13)

a group of people running on a runway
Back in January I wrote about the JFK Runway Run taking place in New York on April 14.
(Many details about the race can be found in my original post HERE.)
In 2012, I ran in four airport runway runs:

I’ve been meaning to post a reminder about the upcoming 5K but it totally slipped my mind.

In July 2012 Kim and I ran in the Teterboro Airport 5K Runway Run in New Jersey. For some reason or another, I never wrote a post or shared my photos from the race. After writing about the date being announced for the 2013 JFK Runway Run it inspired me to share some photos from the Teterboro 5K.

At Tererboro, strollers were not allowed on the runway so Lucas had to sit this race out. Kim waited to sign up for the run on race day just to be sure somebody would be willing to watch Lucas. Luckily our sister-in-law was up to the task (not so hard since Lucas slept the whole time) and Kim got to run!

JFK Runway Run 2013- Date Announced

a group of people running

In 2012 I ran in four 5K Airport Runway Runs. The first runway run that I participated in was at JFK Airport in New York. It was a really fun event with a huge turnout. There were some great views of planes taking off and a generous raffle which gave away many flights!

Even though I didn’t win a flight I still had a great time (and workout) and have been looking forward to the 2013 run.

The other runway runs that I participated in were:

I just received an e-mail from the race coordinators announcing the date for the 2013
JFK Runway Run. The race will be on Sunday, April 14, 2013.

Besides the date for the 2013 race, there was no other information. The site said details to follow- not so helpful!

However, there was a link to register online for the race. I clicked the link and was happy to see loads of information about the race!

Here are the details:

  • Race starts at 9:00AM
  • Number pickup- race day of only- 7:00- 8:40AM at Building 14
  • Online registration closes April 13 at 6:00AM
  • Cost: $25 for adults, $19 for students 18 and under with student IDs
  • Runway Run T-Shirt and Goody Bag guaranteed to anyone registered by April 1
  • All participants are entered in a drawing to win round trip airline tickets
  • There will also be a raffle with tickets for purchase. Airline tickets and other prizes will be given away

Kim and I plan to register for the JFK Runway Run soon, we just have to check our schedules first. Does anybody else plan to sign up for this event?

Click HERE to check out the JFK Runway Run webpage. Details should be added soon.

Chicago O’Hare 5K Runway Run Recap

a group of people running in a race

This past Saturday I ran in my fourth runway run of the year at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport (ORD).

I ended up flying to Chicago for a quick, mini-trip with my brother. You can read about it here

It was a pretty chilly morning but once we got moving, the weather wasn’t a problem.

This was possibly the busiest runway run that I participated in to date. It was announced that over 2,500 runners & walkers participated and over $25,000 was raised for the Wounded Warrior Project. Nice job race organizers!
