Contributor Ridiculous Street Signs # 6- Mile Run- Pennsylvania

a green and white street sign

I recently received an e-mail from Nina (aka Delta Gold Lass on Milepoint) with a pretty funny sign. While the average person might not see the humor, most of us in the mileage collecting hobby should see the humor here!

Nina is a speech language pathologist working with children ages 0-5. Most of them have autism spectrum disorders (I happen to work in the same field as a special educator).
She was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, living directly across from the Atlantic Ocean. She is still not back in her condo yet but her saving grace is travel.

I wanted to find out a little more about this sign and sent Nina a few questions.

Here they are:
MW: Where did you spot the sign?
Nina: I spotted the sign along Route 80 in rural central Pennsylvania.

MW: When did you spot it?
Nina: I saw it on April 19 & 21. I was on the way to a gymnastics event at Penn State with some friends that love gymnastics.

MW: What was your reaction when you saw it?
Nina: I had to stop and pull over to take a picture because it was hilarious. To me it was hysterical in the eyes of a flying freak. I deliberately wait for Delta fares to drop and then take flights to no where just to accumulate MQMs.

MW: How did your friends feel when you decided to pull over?
Nina: My companions are accustomed to my lunacy and some have reaped the benefits. They also laughed, seeing my perspective but also rolled their eyes and grinned to bear the detour!

I want to thank Nina for sending in this sign and sharing a little about it with us!

***For those that don’t know, a mileage run (according to Wikipedia) is “an airline trip designed and taken solely to gain maximum frequent- flyer miles, points or status”.

Contributor Street Signs #4: Allow Us to Eat You- S.Africa

a sign on a pole

I was happy to receive an e-mail from travel blogger Elena. She wanted to share a photo of a sign which she found to be very funny since she had just came back from a safariHaving been on quite a few safaris (spread out over two trips to Africa), I could definitely see the humor in her sign.

Elena blogs about ways to earn miles and her travels around the U.S. at Giddy For Points which is part of the new travel blog aggregate site First2Board.

After receiving the sign photo from Elena, I sent her some questions.

Here they are:

MW: What country & city was the sign seen in?
Elena: I spotted the sign near Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, South Africa.

MW: When did you spot it?
Elena: We were on the way to dinner, looking for a place to eat.

MW: Where was it?
Elena: The sign was at the entrance to a restaurant.

MW: What was your reaction when you saw the sign?
Elena: When we saw the sign we started giggling which caught the attention of the wait- staff. They tried to cover up the sign but I snapped a pic before they did.

MW: Is there anything else of importance that you would like to add?
Elena: This was my first time out of the county. I was visiting a friend in South Africa that was in the peace corp at the time.

Upon further inspection of Elena’s photo, Kim noticed that the “S” was missing. Apparently this restaurant wasn’t looking to eat you, they were really asking to be allowed to seat you.

Look at the difference one letter could make!

Thanks Elena for reaching out and sending in this ridiculous sign!

Contributor Ridiculous Street Signs #3- No Holding Hands- Vienna

a sign on a pole next to a body of water

I recently shared one of my Ridiculous Street Signs posts on travel and frequent flyer site/ community Milepoint. Another member responded to my post by sharing one of his sign photos. I reached out to member M7VO aka Edward M. and asked if he would like to contribute his photo to my collection.

Edward M. was happy to send me his photo and answer a few questions about the time when he spotted it.

a blue and red sign with a red stripe

Here is a little about the photo:

MLW: What country and city was it spotted in?
Edward M: Vienna, Austria- District 22: Donaustadt, coordinates (48.2248, 16.4362)

MLW: When did you spot it?
Edward M: I spotted the sign in October 2012 when I went for a hike along the scenic banks of the Danube River.

MLW: What was your reaction when you saw the sign?
Edward M: At first I was puzzled for a moment, then figured it must be a directive for parents not to bring young children into the protected area. Later in my hike, I saw some unusual- looking birds living and nesting in the area. I realized that the sign was a great idea. The rare birds wouldn’t have adapted to the noise and commotion, if kids and pets were allowed into the habitat.
Just FYI- Vienna is a very kid- friendly city with well equipped playgrounds scattered throughout.

I want to thank Edward M. for sharing his Ridiculous Street Sign photo and letting us know a little about it!
