A beautiful Thai island is being closed to tourists “before it gets ruined forever,” according to TIME.com.

What could possibly be ruining the island? Tourists!

The island is being closed to prevent further damage caused by tourists.

While I can’t say that I’ve heard of Koh Tachai, but it did get rated as the most beautiful Thai island last year by beachmeter.com. The island will close indefinitely starting October 15 due to the damage already done.

TIME mentions a quote from the Thai director general of the department of parks, wildlife and plant conservation saying that “overcrowding and the degradation of natural resources and the environment.”

Closing the island now could give the island a “chance to regenerate“. Beaches are overly crowded, having up to a thousand people at a time which should only comfortably accommodate 70.
