This Is What $1,100 Rent Per Month Will Get You In NYC

Small Apartment

So this is what you could rent for $1,100 in New York City these days…

If you’ve ever wanted to live in NYC and felt that the rent was just too high, think again. A ridiculously small apartment on the Upper West Side is available but all that $1,100 rent will get you is 100 square feet of space.

No zeroes were left off and yes you read that right- a 100 square foot apartment. Could you imagine? A better way to describe the space would probably be a room or walk in closet not an apartment.

I came across the apartment thanks to an article from Curbed which led me to the real estate broker’s Facebook page. On FB he wanted to know if anyone wanted to see NYC’s smallest apartment for rent.

Although the apartment is listed at 100 square feet, according to broker Leon Feingold, the apartment is actually under 100 sq ft! The Facebook page also included a link to the listing for the apartment which was somewhat comical in itself…

Here is the description: (from the Street Easy listing)

  • This famous (featured in media for ridiculously tiny size) apartment is available for the same price partially furnished or unfurnished – and it’s SMALL. How small is it, you ask
  • This apartment is so small, you can’t have three friends over at the same time; one of you will have to wait outside in the hall.
  • It’s so small you can’t gain weight once you move in.
  • It’s so small there’s a bumper on the front door to keep it from hitting the back wall.
  • It’s so small you have to move the bed just to open and close the front door.
  • It’s about 100sf, with the main room perhaps 7′ x 11′, plus a bathroom, NO KITCHEN OR STOVE, and the shower next to the sink. And fortunately, only this bullet point is true.

Imagine for only $1,100 you could rent an apartment which is really a 7×11 room!

The bathroom isn’t exactly a bathroom. The toilet is hidden by a long curtain and the shower is right next to the sink. Oh, and there is no kitchen or stove but a mini-fridge and microwave can be included if you’d like.

A big positive is the location on the Upper West Side along with a low broker’s fee of 15% which comes to $2,000.
