NYU Student Arrested Entering North Korea

A 21 year old NYU student was arrested and charged with illegally entering North Korea.

Joo Won-moon, from New Jersey “was detained on April 22 after crossing the Yalu River from Dandong, China. The river forms part of the North’s border with China,” according to the New York Times.

Won-moon is South Korean and supposedly holds permanent resident status in the U.S. admitted to violating North Korean law.

When the Times reached out to NYU, a spokesman said that a student named Won Moon Joo was a junior at the Stern School of Business but was not taking classes this semester. The school was not aware of his travels but has been in touch with the State Department and South Korean embassy.

The article mentions how in recent years others have been detained by the North Korea- China border, getting charged with working as spies.
