Postcards From: Mandalay- Pink Monks

Mandalay Myanmar

Kim, Lucas and I are currently on our trip around Myanmar (Burma). Our first stop is Mandalay, the second largest city in the country.

During the first day of our trip, walking back to our hotel, we got a bit distracted.

Along the way we saw a group of monks, mostly children in pink robes collecting alms. While the robes totally caught our attention, it was like nothing we’ve ever seen before during previous encounters.

Some of the monks smiled and waved at us so I decided to snap a few photos.

When I looked into why these monks wore pink, it turned out that it was due to them actually being female monks, more so nuns.

I can’t say that we’d ever heard of females being monks, have you?

  1. If you have the time it is well worth visiting visiting Popa mountain and Imle lake. I traveled there by car from Mandalay
