Leonardo DiCaprio bought a private island back in 2005 and now plans to open an eco-resort featuring 68 resort villas and 48 very pricey private homes, according to an article that I came across from Curbed.

The 104 acre island is part of Belize and was bought by Leo along with a partner for only $1.75 million.

The island called Blackadore Caye will be DiCaprio’s project “to do something that will change the world” DiCaprio told the New York Times. “I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement.”

The resort “will have villas on platforms over water, artificial reefs with “fish shelters” and a nursery growing marine grass  to feed manatees” according to Curbed. It’s planned to open in 2018.

There was originally a deal with the Four Seasons which never worked out so DiCaprio is now working with NYC developers Delos on the project.

Besides the resort having lots of amazing eco-friendly aspects, it sounds like Leo and his partner stand to also make a nice profit from this project. While there are no prices listed for what villas will cost to rent, the private homes will cost between $5 – $15 million! Wow…

The development will also be sustainable and restorative, too. Trees will be replanted, scientists will do studies on how the resort effects the surroundings and a conservation area to rehabilitate areas which have been over-fished will also be developed.

Pretty cool stuff.

  1. Ronin- I’m guessing most would fly and then take a boat to the private island. How do you travel? Nobody is saying that air travel is eco-friendly but it does sound like the resort being developed will try to do it’s part to help the environment.

  2. If it’s eco-friendly how do people get there? Just another example of a limousine liberal environmentalists who can think up a scheme to get people’s money.
