Earlier in the month I wrote about how American Airlines was becoming the New Official Airline of the Chicago Cubs.
It looks like the airline is looking to further expand their ties to sports and have announced another major sponsorship, this time with another NBA team.
“American Airlines is further bolstering its presence in Los Angeles” where it “already serves more customers than any other airline at LAX” according to press release on hub.aa.com. They plan to spend over $2 billion on improvements that will help “the travel experience at the airport and on their flights“.
What does AA’s sponsorship of the Clippers entail?
- The AA logo will appear on the court during Clippers home games
- They’ll be a featured sponsor during TV and radio broadcasts
- Participation for AA employees with the Clippers “in the team’s charitable events throughout the year”
- “American customers and employees will also have the opportunity to take part in festivities and events with the Clippers during the season”
I find it interesting that American Airlines will be sponsoring another NBA team since they already have the naming rights to two basketball arenas.
There is the American Airlines Center in Dallas which is home to the Dallas Mavericks and the American Airlines Arena in Miami, home to the Miami Heat. (US Airways currently has their name on the home of the Phoenix Suns but the deal won’t be renewed when it expires this year.)
Maybe this was more the Clippers idea, looking to get a bit of the AA luck to rub off on them. In 2011 the Mavericks beat the Heat for the NBA title and the Heat have made it to the finals each of the last four seasons, winning two during that time!
