Food Review: McDonald’s Mozzarella Sticks

McDonalds Mozzarella Sticks

Some of you may have noticed that I like to visit McDonald’s while traveling around the world.

While McD’s is a place that I rarely ever dine at while home, I love stopping in international locations to see if any interesting items (which are not available in the U.S.) are sold.

From time to time I might stop at a McDonald’s at home. For example, we stopped at the Train Car McD’s in Massachusetts a few years back but didn’t order anything to eat.

In a post last month, Awesome McDonald’s Dishes You Can’t Get In America, a reader commented that fried mozzarella sticks were being test-marketed at a location in Queens.

I didn’t try to track down the mozzarella sticks by looking into which location in Queens sold them. However, a few weeks later I saw a poster hanging up at a McDonald’s location close to Lucas’ school advertising the item.

I decided- since Lucas loves mozzarella sticks and I love to check out not so typical McD’s menu items, we’d stop in one day to sample them.

Here are my thoughts on McDonald’s Mozzarella Sticks.

McDonalds Mozzarella Sticks

McDonald’s Mozzarella Sticks come with marinara sauce. For $1 you get 3 pieces and you’ll be on the hook for 200 calories.

When I opened up the package, I felt that the sticks looked a bit small but they did look pretty tasty. You could see little flecks of seasoning in the breading which was a nice yellow-brown color. They also smelled pretty good, too.

The marinara sauce was a dark red color and it looked something like a cross between barbecue sauce and ketchup.
McDonalds Mozzarella SticksWhen I tried my first mozzarella stick, I liked what I tasted. The stick had a lot of flavor and wasn’t bland like I was expecting it to be. The best way to describe the flavoring would be fried breading but not really greasy with a bit of an oniony taste. The cheese inside didn’t have a ton of flavor but the whole mozzarella stick was pretty decent.

As for the sauce, it was a bit stronger than I like for a marinara. I wasn’t a huge fan of this element but I still dipped each stick nonetheless.

The other main thing I noticed (not so surprisingly) about the mozzarella sticks was the fact that the cheese wasn’t at all gooey or stringy when I bit into it. The cheese inside seems more like a blob. If you look closely at the photo just above, you’ll see how the cheese looks like old grilled cheese when it gets cold and congeals.

While I’ve only tried McDonald’s Mozzarella Sticks this one time, if I happened to stop in again, I would order them. I’m not saying these are some of the best mozzarella sticks I’ve ever had, but for a $1 for 3 it seems like a decent deal.

If you happen to find yourself dining at McDonald’s and mozzarella sticks are on the menu, I’d recommend that you give them a try.

    1. It’s my party and i’ll cry if i want to – right on Michael W. ! I’m with ya; traveling invariably leads to Mickey D’s 🙂

  1. Agree with the other posters. Reviewing toxic McDonald’s “food” on a travel blog? Saying it’s related to travel is a reach. This has no place on BoardingArea.

  2. Ummm really gotta say I agree with Kevin B above. A review of cheese sticks by McDs?? Didn’t have to click on it or scan thru it obviously, but I just had to see you were serious. Wow…you were.

  3. Kevin B- Thanks for the comment and sorry to have wasted all of your time. This isn’t a long read so I hope that it didn’t waste more than a minute, maybe two max!

For me, a new McDonald’s menu item is related to travel. Since I like to check out McD’s outside the US to see what is offered, trying out a new menu item at home is also interesting.

  4. This is a travel blog, and you posted a review on McDonalds cheese sticks. What a stupid article and a waste of time. I read this thinking there had to be some sort of travel connection, and when it wasted all my time, I decided to speak out.
