$800K To Spare? Buy Your Own Town

town for sale

Earlier in the year I wrote about a couple of options to become the owner of your own town! Sounds pretty cool and what’s more impressive than saying you own a town…

There was a European town available at the bargain basement price of $0 although it would certainly cost a small fortune to bring it back to live-in condition. If you are more interested in staying close to home, a town in the U.S. was going for a cool $1.5 million. This one came with a general store along with some other buildings in better shape than the one in Europe.

Here is a third option I just came across. If you’d like to own a town on the East Coast of the U.S., then this might be for you.

According to Curbed, “An entire ghost town in Connecticut complete with eight historic (derelict) buildings” is going up for auction with the opening price listed at $800,000.

The town is on 62 acres in the Village of Johnsonville in Moodus, Connecticut.

Johnsonville was originally a mill village. It’s 30 minutes from Hartford and two hours from New York City and Boston.

My guess is that it would take a small fortune to restore the town.

Auctions.com says “the historic village presents a unique redevelopment opportunity to combine the historic value of the 19th century village with 21st century living as permitted uses include: single family, multifamily housing to include market rate and affordable, senior housing, arts/entertainment center, B&B’s, inn, restaurant/banquet facility, retail shops and schools”.

So what do you think? Would you like to be the owner of your own town? I’d guess that you’d get to be the mayor by default!
