  1. I am gold elite and already have 4-6 JUL reservation at Aruba with Carlson Credit benefit using 75,000 points. There is a Sun, Sand and Double Points promotion rate of $233.35 (still showing X 2 nites + est taxes (of $115.76) for total of $548. My math skills are weak, so could you check the following and provide your opinion?

Assuming half the price comes off for the credit card benefit, I would earn 40 points per dollar (20 for gold elite and 20 for double point promo) multiplied against $291 = 11,649 points + 4077 points (for the additional 35% points for credit card)= 15,726 plus the cost of one night + taxes. So using the $291 total rate, my redemption rate is 3.8 cents on 75,000, sounds like a great redemption, but should I pay cash instead, earn 15k points and keep my 75k as well? Thanks!

    1. Kim- The free night bonus for 2 nights or more is on award stays so I am not sure how you are getting half the price to come off?

If you were to book paying for your stay, I am pretty sure you would only earn on the rate not the taxes. You could also click through TopCashBack to get 5% back. Unless this is the only option,it is not a rate we would pay since we book way more budget.

Using points doesn’t sound like such a bargain either at 75,000 points. Too bad you weren’t going a different date when some redemptions go for 50K per night.

If I was dead set on staying at this property I’d use my points since I just can’t see spending $275 per night at any hotel.

      1. Thanks for the reminder that the free second night only works with points redemption. We are trying out SW’s flight to Aruba for 4th July weekend, so need to stay someplace. My alternative plan is 25k IHG® Rewards Club Points per night for total 50k at the Holiday Inn Resort Aruba-Beach Resort & Casino for which I also have a reservation. I guess the Club Carlson points are more valuable, so I could save them for a trip to Europe. However, the Club Carlson property seemed a bit nicer from the reviews, it was just a two night stay and I haven’t yet used the credit card benefit yet. So I was leaning towards the Club Carlson property. Let me know if you have thoughts on the subject. Thanks for the earlier reply!
