While I don’t have a bucket list (I actually really dislike the term and idea of it), I still have a mental list of certain countries and sites that I’d love to see and explore some day.
If I had to make a short list of top places I’d recommend to visit that I’ve already been to, it would look something like this:
- Explore the mystery of Easter Island
- Visit Machu Picchu
- Go on a mountain gorilla trek in Africa
- Travel around Japan by train
- Spend a few days at Petra
- Take a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia
- Hiking in Patagonia

I was curious to see which places made the cut and also find out how many I’ve been to.

After looking over Fodor’s list, I thought they made some great choices. I’ve been to 10 of the 20 places mentioned and have wanted to (and have considered going to) the others at one time or another.

A rather odd list and does not include USA – I gather that was intentional otherwise it is hard to see why SF, Yosemite and other places did not make the cut. Some of these are kind of absurd – Antartica and Everest are not too accessible with Galapagos not far behind. Includes Rio but not Greek Islands? Iceland but not Venice or Athens? Seems like somebody going out of their way to pick more remote exotic places rather than ones with historical significance.
