Back in October I wrote about Budget Travel’s 9th annual contest to name the Coolest Small Town In America for 2014.

The voting has ended and Budget Travel has named the Top 10.

To qualify for the title of Coolest Small Town, the town must have a population under 10,000 people.

Budget Travel was also looking for a certain something that no place else has: great shops, food, a unique history, a breathtaking location, peerless music scene, art galleries, or maybe something cool we haven’t even thought of yet!

Here is Budget Travel’s Top 10:

  1. Berlin, MD
  2. Cazenovia, NY
  3. Buckhannon, WV
  4. Travelers Rest, SC
  5. Mathews, VA
  6. Nevada City, CA
  7. Rockport, TX
  8. Estes Park, CO
  9. Galena, IL
  10. Elkin, NC

While I haven’t visited any of these small towns, I’d love to try to check out a couple in the future.  Numbers 1 & 2 from the list are each under a 4.5 hour drive from the NYC area.

If you’ve visited any of America’s Coolest Small Towns for 2014, let us know what it was like and if you feel it deserves this distinction from BT.

  1. I visited Estes Park, CO and have a blog post about it. Great little town & the gateway to Rocky Mountain NP. Some of the others are on my list:)

  2. Galena, IL. is OK but I don’t find it that interesting. They do host some neat events there. I like Park City UT, Dillion CO., Georgetown, CO. Metropolis, IL. Greensburg, KS. and Eminence, MO.
