Nat Geo: Top 10 World Heritage Sites For Kids

Prior to heading off on our trips, I’ll usually check to see if there are any UNESCO World Heritage Sites in or near the places we are visiting. At times we’ll go out of our way to visit a site that sounds really interesting.

There are close to 1,000 sites listed  and I’ve been to around 85 of them so far.

National Geographic put together a Top 10 list of World Heritage Sites for Kids. According to NatGeo, they went over the heritage list to choose destinations of sublime beauty and historical significance that will inspire travelers young and old.

While Lucas isn’t old enough to enjoy these kind of sites just yet, I was still interested in seeing what they came up with.

From the list of 10, Kim and I have visited 3 of the sites (listed in bold).

Check out Nat Geo’s Top 10:

  • The Carnival of Barranquilla, Colombia
  • Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
  • Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
  • Wayang Puppet Theater, Java & Bali, Indonesia
  • Colosseum and Roman Forum, Rome, Italy
  • Sian Ka’an, Quintana Roo, Mexico
  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
  • Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada
  • Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
  • Goreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, Turkey

Of the sites that we’ve visited, I could definitely see kids loving Cappadocia. When you see the landscape, it feels like you are on another planet. I wasn’t too familiar with some of the other sites listed but we were also close to the Serengeti a few years back. Kim and I visited the Masai Mara in Kenya which is connected to the Serengeti. We almost visited a puppet theater in Bali but passed since Lucas was not even 9 months old but we did buy him a couple of small puppets to hang up in his room.

If you’ve been to any of the UNESCO sites that Nat Geo recommended, please let us know if you think they would be good for kids.
