Zagat: 50 States, 50 Sandwiches

a hand holding a burgerBack in late August, Zagat had an article about regional sandwiches around the U.S. When I saw the article’s title “50 States, 50 Sandwiches”, only a few sandwiches came to mind. I thought of New Orleans (Louisiana) for the Po’ Boy & Muffeletta and Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) for the Philly Cheesesteak.

The article got me wondering about what other regional sandwiches existed around the country. I also wondered if I’ve heard of some of the others. I’d assume there would be some that just didn’t come to mind initially.

I’m not going to list all 50 sandwiches but will mention some that I find to be most interesting, some that I have tried, others that I would love to!

Here are some of the sandwiches listed:

  • California- The French Dip– a meat sandwich that you “dip in it’s own juices”
  • Connecticut- CT Style Hot Lobster Roll– hot lobster sandwich with butter
  • Illinois- The Italian Beef– thin slices of roast beef with pickled vegetables on top
  • Maine- Lobster Roll– cold lobster sandwich mixed with mayo or butter
  • Minnesota- The Juicy Lucy– (shown in the photo above) stuffed burger with the cheese on the inside
  • Nevada- Catfish Sloppy Joe– “catfish tossed with green peppers and onion with a kicky tomato-based bbq sauce.”
  • Oklahoma- Chicken-Fried Steak Sandwich– “top sirloin steak dredged in special seasoning and hand breaded”.
  • Rhode Island- Italian Grinder– “a long, soft white roll…with hot capicola, pepperoni, genoa salami, provolong, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and Italian dressing”
  • Vermont- Vermonter– “a sweet & savory sandwich” with turkey or ham, sharp Vermont cheddar, thin-sliced green apples and honey mustard

Which state sandwich from the list would you most like to try?
