Our Upcoming Memorial Day Weekend Trip: Milwaukee, WI

a map of a city

We’ll be flying to Milwaukee for Memorial Day Weekend tonight.

Some of you might be wondering- Why Milwaukee?
I was looking to fly somewhere relatively close (and direct) on Southwest Airlines. At a little over 2.5 hours away Milwaukee seemed like a good choice. Other places under consideration were Detroit (Kim did not want to go) and Omaha (connecting flights made the flights too long for such a short weekend).

Visiting Milwaukee was appealing to me for a few reasons.
I’ll get to:

  1. Visit a new state- Wisconsin
  2. Visit another baseball stadium- Miller Park- Brewers
  3. Lots of great food and beer options
  4. Check out sites/ museums around the city

Trip Planning:

The Flights:
We’re flying round trip with Southwest Airlines

  • New York (LGA)- Milwaukee (MKE)- 11,880 points (purchase price $209)
  • Milwaukee (MKE)- New York (LGA)- 6,540 points (purchase price $120)
Thanks to my Companion Pass, Kim gets to fly for free and Lucas does too as a lap baby until he turns two in January. All we had to pay on top of the points listed above was $10 in taxes for Kim and I.
The Hotel:
  • Country Inn & Suites Milwaukee Airport- average cost of $81 per night ($93 with tax)
I wanted to stay downtown but the hotels were very expensive. Even if we found a deal or used hotel points, parking would’ve been an added cost that I didn’t want to pay for.
.
Club Carlson recently came out with a new promotion. While not nearly as lucrative as what was offered last year, it is still a decent offer. For staying two or more nights, you earn 10,000 bonus Gold Points. (register for the promo here)
I should earn 20,000+ points from this hotel stay which will hopefully give me 1-2 free nights of hotel stays in the future.
.
There weren’t a lot of options for Club Carlson properties in the Milwaukee area so I settled on the hotel by the airport. The airport is only around a 10-15 minute drive to many of the places we will visit so this definitely seems like a good choice.
.
Car Rental:
Just like with my car rental for Colorado, I booked with Hertz. I used a couple of codes that I found in a post by Boarding Area blog Deals We Like. The 3 day car rental will come to a little under $64 including taxes and fees.
.
Make sure to keep checking back for posts about our time in Milwaukee.
Stay tuned!
